MONTEREY and HOT SPRINGS — Highland and Bath County hooked up in a pair of girls’ basketball games last week, both junior varsity contests. Each team won on their home floor. The Chargers scored a 58-38 victory at home last Wednesday, before the Rams won 52-10 Friday in Monterey. Addie Lockridge scored 26 points and Trinity Forbes added 20, leading Bath in the home win. Macey Paxton added six for Bath County, which led 30-19 at the halftime break. Ryleigh Phillips with four and Bre Mabe with two rounded out the scoring. Amelia Good made six threes and had 22 points for the Rams. Colleen Adams added nine points, Makynley Smith had three and both Brooke Williams and Hannah Meyerhoeffer scored two. In Friday’s game, the Rams led 29-8 at the half. Adams led Highland with 16 points, Smith had 15 and Williams scored 10. Good added nine points and Daisy Moyers scored two. Mabe had six points for Bath, while Kennedi Pritt and Paxton scored two each. Monday night, Narrows outscored the Rams 13-6 in the fourth quarter of a 41-34 win. Caelyn Buracker scored 13 points for Narrows, while Layla Lewis had 11. Williams had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Rams (9-8) and Adams added 10 points and three assists. (Recorder photos by Zach Potter) HOT SPRINGS — The Highland Rams defeated Bath County on the road 40-28 last Wednesday. The first quarter was deadlocked as the teams were tied 4-4. But the Rams broke through in the second quarter. Zach Armstrong scored six points in just the second, as Eli Moore and Elijah Good each had four as Highland moved to a 19-9 lead at halftime. John Wagner scored the first points of the second half for Highland before Moore was sent to the line, sinking both free throws as the Ram lead grew to 23-9. The Chargers got their chance to answer back, as Luke Turner drove down the lane, but was fouled on his attempt. Turner then made back-to-back free throws closing the score to 26-13. Turner and Cooper Lowry made tough inside shots to cut the Rams’ lead to 11. But Bath continued to get called for fouls in the paint on defense, allowing Highland multiple opportunities at the foul line. The Rams finished five of eight at the line from the midway point, with Wagner leading the way making three of his four, extending Highland’s lead to 33-18. Issac Ingram hit an impressive lay-up through the Ram defense. But Patton Hull answered right back with a deep three for Highland. Ingram hit another tough lay-up and Zayne Hall collected two steals, driving one for a lay-up as the Chargers cut into Highland’s lead. However, it was too little too late when Turner drained a lay-up right before time expired. Moore led the Rams in scoring with 11. Armstrong and Wagner tied for second on the team with nine apiece. Ingram led the way for Bath with 10 points and Turner finished second on the team with eight points. Highland head coach Thomas Moore had tons of praise for his team. “The guys did a good job looking inside — the main thing is teamwork. A lot of the times we didn’t wing passes off but if we can do a better job; we’ll be OK.” Moore said. “Ultimately, what it comes down to,” said Charger head coach Zach Woodzell, “this might have been our lowest-scoring game; those guys ate up the boards. The Highland junior went for a game-high 26 points, added five rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocked shots, helping the Rams to a 54-20 junior varsity girls’ basketball win over Harman, W.Va. The hosts led 12-6 at the first stop and had a 29-10 lead by intermission. Makynley Smith joined Adams in double figures with 11 points, Hannah Meyerhoeffer scored eight, Brooke Williams had six and Anna Meehan scored three. Williams led Highland on the glass with 12 rebounds to go with three assists and two blocks, Smith had five rebounds and three steals and Adelaide Baxter had three steals. The Rams won on the road at Richwood last Wednesday, 42-26, and lost a pair of close home decisions on Friday against Craig County, 36-34, and at home on Monday against Pocahontas, 30-26. Adams scored 14 points for the winners, Amelia Good added 10, Smith had nine points and four assists, Williams pulled in seven rebounds to go with five points and Meyerhoeffer added four points. Kyndra Rose had 11 points for Richwood and Alexxis Keiffer added 10. Emily Smith was 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and scored a game-high 21 points for the Rockets on Friday in Monterey. Adams scored 14 points, had six rebounds, four assists and three steals for Highland and Good added 11 points and had three blocked shots. Meyerhoeffer with five and Williams with four completed the HHS scoring. Williams pulled in nine rebounds, Meyerhoeffer had seven rebounds and Smith had three assists. In Monday’s loss to Pocahontas, Adams had 15 points, Smith scored five, Good added three, Meyerhoeffer had two and Williams scored one. Williams led the Rams on the glass with 10 rebounds. Riley Cassell scored 10 points to lead Pocahontas, including a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final quarter, while Caroline Bennett added seven. Highland, now 3-3 in the Pioneer District and 7-5 overall, hosts Union Educational Complex on Saturday and Eastern Montgomery next Tuesday.

The Rockets of New Castle. The Warriors of Pocahontas County. The Panthers of Harman. One by one, the guys from Highland knocked off their four opponents over the last week. The Rams completed the stretch Tuesday night, routing Harman, 64-40, in Monterey, running their record to 7-6 on the year. Highland coach Thomas Moore is pleased with the unselfishness of his group. “They are playing well as a team,” he said. “They are taking their time and looking for each other.” Zach Armstrong handed out 13 assists in Tuesday’s win and John Wagner continued his scoring barrage with four threes and 25 points. Elijah Good was also in double figures with 13 points. Armstrong just missed a triple double, adding six points, three steals and 10 rebounds, Eli Moore had 10 boards and four steals, Wagner had nine rebounds and Good grabbed eight misses. The other three wins included: • HHS 34, Richwood 23 — Wagner scored a game-high 18 points in a victory in West Virginia last Wednesday night. Good added seven points and eight rebounds for the winners and Moore scored six points and had 15 boards. Hull had three assists and both Wagner and Levi Warner had five rebounds. Grady Hall scored nine points for the Lumberjacks. • HHS 40, Craig County 28 — The Rams won a Pioneer District matchup with the Rockets in Monterey last Friday. Wagner scored 13 points and had nine rebounds for Highland, while Moore added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Good had a team-high 12 rebounds and Armstrong handed out six assists. Luke Potter scored seven points for Craig County. The Rams led 20-12 at the halftime break. • HHS 59, Pocahontas County 40 — Highland beat up the Warriors on Monday in Monterey. The Rams led 32-24 at the half and 44-33 after three quarters. Wagner led the Rams with 26 points, Armstrong had 13 and Hull added nine. Moore grabbed 12 rebounds, Good pulled in 10 boards, Armstrong had 10 assists and three steals and Hull had five assists and three blocked shots. Ben Workman scored 11 points for Pocahontas County and Dillon Dunz scored nine. The Rams host Boys Home tonight and have a make-up home game with Union Educational Complex on Saturday afternoon.
