Highland County Public Schools honored two staff members at its inaugural Teacher of the Year ceremony Monday. Pictured above, right, with superintendent Dr. Nick Nycum, Vernon Simmons, a school custodian and bus driver, was recognized as Support Staff of the Year. “He goes above and beyond for us,” Nycum said. “The school would not run without Vernon, who has been with us for 18 years.” Simmons said, “I have had fun, and it has been nice being here.” Mike Warf, at right below with Highland High School principal Tim Good, was named Teacher of the Year. “He has been here for 30 years and has done a phenomenal job,” Good said. “He’s done it all.” Good noted Warf made Highland his home, from teaching multiple subjects at the middle and high school levels to serving as athletic director, organizing trips to Washington, D.C., and helping run the middle school bazaar. For younger teachers, Good added, “He’s your model. He has stayed here and made things happen. He is very deserving and we are sad to see him go.” Warf plans to retire at the end of the school year. “Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful years—you’re all wonderful,” Warf said. “Seeing former students and now their children makes me feel old. Thank you all very much.” Nycum said the new awards aim to highlight outstanding personnel. Both Simmons and Warf received plaques, with duplicates to be displayed in the school. The awards are voted on by HCPS faculty and staff, most of whom were present to give hearty applause to the recipients. (Recorder photos by Rebecca Arcure)
