MONTEREY — The Highland-Bath Farm Bureau is offering a grant to local youth. The mini-grant program provides funds to young people in Highland or Bath counties who wish to start or expand an agriculture or local-based business enterprise.

The funds may be used to purchase equipment, education, livestock, or materials.

This grant is open to Highland or Bath County residents age 16 to 25 at application time. Pick up applications at local schools, your local Farm Bureau office, or call 540-468-2605 to have one emailed to you.

Up to $1,000 is available each for Highland and Bath counties and may be split between more than one applicant. Written applications must be received by the Highland-Bath County Farm Bureau office by close of business May 1.

Eligible applicants may be asked by the review committee to attend a Highland-Bath Farm Bureau meeting to present about their project.

Recipients of the grant will be announced after the May county board meeting.

The Highland-Bath County Farm Bureau will coordinate with the mini grant recipients to arrange purchase of their approved items. There will be no direct payment to an individual.

Grant recipients will be required to attend a Highland-Bath Farm Bureau meeting for acknowledgement of award and must provide a written summary report to the board at the 12-month mark, prior to the board’s May meeting.

Recipients may be asked to attend the annual membership dinner to report on progress as well as a follow up board meeting to present the written report to the board at the end of the project.

Grant recipients can reapply after three years but will not be awarded a grant more than twice.

Recipients found not in compliance with mini grant rules may be asked to pay back the cash value of mini grant award and/or materials received from the grant.
