NARROWS — The Highland girls’ 4×100-meter relay team had already assured themselves a spot in the Class 1 state meet at James Madison University.

Monday at Narrows, senior Colleen Adams, sophomore Adelaide Baxter and freshmen Amelia Good and Brooke Williams tacked on a district title.

The foursome put together a time of 53.29 and beat out Narrows by nearly four seconds for a win at the Pioneer District championship meet.

It was the highlight of a solid day for the Rams, which had 10 athletes compete.

“I am extremely happy with the way we competed,” said HHS coach Colby Jackson. “Obviously, we are still working toward getting healthy and I hope to be back to 100 percent by the state meet. We have had an amazing season with six school records broken and to cap it off yesterday, our first-ever district (relay) championship in the 4×100 was an amazing moment.”

Even with Williams, the relay anchor, at less than 100 percent, the Rams cruised to the title and will take the fastest time into next week’s region meet.

“They have a lot of talent,” said Adams about her young relay teammates. “I am so glad I’ve gotten to run with them this year. I kind of wish I would have gotten to run with them earlier or been closer in age with them. But by the time they get to senior year, they are going to be very fast. Now, we’ve got to run our best at regional and see what happens. We just want to be the best.”

Baxter added a second place in the long jump (16-7) and third-place runs in both the 100-meter (13.57) and 200-meter (28.33) dashes, scoring a team-high 22½ points.

Her long jump tied Williams for the school record, set earlier this year.

“Adelaide has done great with this having been her first year doing track,” said Jackson.

Williams placed third in the 400 (1:03.31) and totaled 12½ points and Kristina Neil set a personal best in the discus with a fourth-place throw of 72 feet.

On the boys’ side of the meet, Luke Baxter, Adelaide’s big brother, coupled a second in the 800 (2:08.10) and a third in the 1,600 (4:53.93) for 14 points, while Zach Armstrong had a third in the 400 (55.41) and scored seven points.

“Luke ran his personal best time in the mile and shaved more than 10 seconds from his first-ever mile attempt,” Jackson said. “He has truly willed himself to be that competitive through hard work at practice.

“We had a few kids who ended their season yesterday, but not due to lack of effort,” he added. “I could not be more proud of the way these kids have built each other up and supported each other through the ups and downs of competition.”

Narrows, behind a sprint sweep from Caelyn Buracker, won the girls’ team district title, with Eastern Montgomery winning the boys’ championship, behind eight event victories.

The Pioneer District teams will join the Mountain Empire District schools for the Class 1, Region C championships next Tuesday at Eastern Montgomery High School. The Class 1 and 2 state meets are June 5 and 6, at JMU.
