NATIONAL FFA WEEK! February 20th - February 24th Any FFA member is welcome to meet and greet the state officers. They will be at Sugar Tree Country Store in McDowell from 11:00am - 11:35am. Then they will go to the McDowell Fire House from 11:40am - 12:10pm.

$100 SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE!! Hello Highland Sharpshooter families! I wanted to make everyone aware of a Shooting Education Camp opportunity this summer. Registration is now open for the 2023 4-H/NRA Shooting Education Camp held at the Holiday Lake Education Center. This year’s camp will take place Sunday, July 30th through Thursday, August 3rd. Disciplines offered will be: · Archery · Muzzleloading · Pistol · Shotgun · Small Bore Rifle · Air Rifle (addition for 2023) The Highland Sharpshooters 4-H Club will offer a $100 scholarship for any members who plan to attend this camp opportunity. NHS is selling ButterBraid Pastries now until February 24th. They are delicious pastries with different types of fillings. They come frozen and are easy to bake when ready to enjoy! Students will be selling by paper order forms but also online. Even if you place the order online, the student you buy from will be responsible for delivery. Application: https://form.jotform.com/230293734737158 Website: https://www.amifellows.org/farm-fellowship From May 1 through October 27, AMI sponsors a cohort of passionate individuals to learn, live, and study together on the Allegheny Farm in rural Highland County, VA. Participants live and work on a Certified Naturally Grown farm, study and practice cottage industry skills, and distribute fresh produce to a remote, but lively, Appalachian community. Fellows build a wide variety of practical farming skills through hands-on farm time and experiential learning, complemented by weekly educational and skills development sessions. Educational scholarships to all selected Fellows includes a $1,700 monthly stipend, along with housing, farm-fresh vegetables and farm products, and a group pantry budget. Additional need-based scholarships are available for travel and gear expenses.

February is School Board Appreciation Month! At last night's School Board Meeting, second graders led us in the pledge of allegiance then gave the Board Members handmade cards. Dr. Maerz presented certificates of appreciation from the Virginia Department of Education to each of our Board Members. The industrial trades class crafted drink coasters as gifts and our cafeteria manager, Mrs. Jamison, prepared a delicious cake and snacks for a celebration after the meeting. Join us in thanking Kenny Hodges, Sherry Sullenberger, and Joe Neil for all their hard work and dedication to our school system!

If you would like to send a valentine to a student or faculty, please email Mrs. Hise at mhise@highland.k12.va.us with the subject line "Send a Valentine''. Then please state the following: Senders' Name: Recipients' Name: Grade Level: Message: And state if you'd like to purchase a cookie or brownie ($1) or both ($2) You may drop money off at the elementary or high school office by Friday February 10th.
