BUENA VISTA — Jazmine Douglas won three events and Colton Williams added two individual victories and a relay win, leading Highland to pair of top finishes at a Pioneer District track meet last Wednesday at Parry McCluer High School.
The Rams won the boys’ meet, while the girls finished second behind Eastern Montgomery.
Williams sprinted to victories in both the 100 meters (12.37) and 200 meters (24.77) and ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x100-meter relay team (48.94) to lead Highland with 14¼ points.
Eli Moore added a win in the 400 meters (1:00.67) and joined Ethan Moore, Cayden Roberson and Williams in the relay victory.
Covington’s Purcel Turner jumped 17 feet, 6 inches to win the long jump in the Cougars’ first meet of the season.
Douglas continued her solid freshman season for the Highland girls.
She scored wins in the 100 meters (14.14), 200 meters (31.25) and long jump (13-1) to total 15 points, while Zalea Good added eight points for the Rams.
“Jazmine is undefeated in the 100 meters (in three meets) up to this point and she tied for high individual points in the Richwood meet which had 10 teams and numerous competitors,” said Rams coach Colby Jackson. “And our boys’ 4x100 team has qualified for region competition.
“Our team is doing great,” he added. “The kids have really bought into what myself and coach Danny Hull have been teaching and they are improving every week. I can’t say enough about every athlete we have. Every boy I have competing is also on the baseball team and they have had games the day before or the day after all but one meet and have brought fantastic energy to each meet.”
Covington got a late start to the season under first-year head coach Lychelle Hall, a former standout track athlete at Alleghany.
The Cougars have just five varsity athletes — senior Mitchell Tallman, a four-time state pole vault champion; juniors Dean Anderson, Matthew Coulter and Henry Rogers; and sophomore Purcel Turner — competing, along with three eighth graders — Elijah Fasig, Desmond Jordan and Tyaieja Smith.
Jordan won three events in Wednesday’s middle school/junior varsity portion of the meet — the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump.
“Even though we are small in numbers our athletes excelled today,” Hall said. “It’s a privilege to coach a great group of kids.”
Both Covington and Highland were back on the track Wednesday in a Pioneer District meet at Eastern Montgomery.
