Highland Elementary School’s kindergarten class kicked off its Zero to Hero Program on the 10th day of school, featuring two guests — Highland High School principal Richard Miller and his therapy dog, Bruno. Miller talked with students about what it means to be a leader, including setting goals, making good choices, and being a positive example for others. The school’s Zero to Hero Program uses engaging activities and explicit phonics instruction to help students build skills from recognizing letters and sounds to becoming confident, fluent readers. In the Kindergarten classroom, it also applies to Math with learning numbers 0-100 and counting by 5's and 10's. Every 10 days a visitor comes to share their career or talents with them. The students love making a snack to match the digit of 10 for that day.
