MONTEREY — This year, one of Highland County Public School’s programs was highlighted in a special edition of the Virginia School Boards Association “Showcases for Success.”
HCPS submitted is proposed “Growing Highland: A K-12 Agricultural Learning and Community Partnership Model,” which was featured in the 30th edition of the VSBA newsletter.
“This is a significant recognition and highlights the great work happening at Highland County Public Schools,” said superintendent Dr. Nick Nycum.
“A special thank you to Mrs. (Jen) Neil for her hard work and leadership in agricultural education, including the outstanding Ag Day she organized this spring,” Nycum said. “Her efforts helped showcase the strong partnership between our schools and community.
This is something we can all be proud of.”
The special edition directory featured 62 exceptional programs representing 30 school divisions throughout Virginia. VSBA explained, “Each program reflects the creativity, leadership, and commitment that define public education in Virginia. Together, these divisions showcase a wide range of innovative practices designed to support student achievement and strengthen school communities.”
Twelve schools were highlighted, including Highland. HCPS’ program integrates a student greenhouse with its divisionwide Agricultural and Natural Resources Field Day. The description explains, “In a small, rural division with limited access to off-campus experiences, HCPS brings industry and real-world applications directly to students through partnerships with organizations such as Mountain Soil and Water Conservation District, Virginia Department of Forestry, local FFA and 4-H programs, and Bath Community Hospital through its ‘Food is Medicine’ initiative.”
It continues, “This model has strengthened student engagement, expanded STEM and CTE pathways, and contributed to improved academic outcomes through meaningful, place-based learning.”
