ELLISTON — Tack on another championship for the girls from Highland.

Colleen Adams, Amelia Good, Adelaide Baxter and Brooke Williams, who won the Pioneer District 4×100 relay title last week, ran to a Class 1, Region C win Tuesday at Eastern Montgomery, breaking their own school-record with a time of 52.47.

It was a big day for the Rams, who placed sixth in the girls’ team points race and had a number of season-best efforts.

“Today was an amazing day for our Highland athletes,” said HHS coach Colby Jackson. “After a solid week of practice and a Memorial Day run in the rain, our girls’ 4×100 were able to accomplish the goal of winning the region championship. They ran a healthy race and it showed.”

The Ram foursome won by nearly a second and a half over the runner-up team from George Wythe.

It wasn’t the only highlight for the group.

Williams placed second in the 200; Baxter placed in three individual events; and Adams scored points in another.

“Brooke was able to finish runner-up in the region in the 200-meter after being mostly recovered from her injury,” Jackson said. “Amelia, Colleen and Adelaide had a strong showing in the 100 and ran great. Amelia and Adelaide also added great performances in the 200 with Adelaide placing fifth, nearly getting into the state run. Kristina Neil came and threw discus and threw well against great competition.”

Zach Armstrong picked up the lone points for the Highland boys, with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash.

“Zach was fourth by a toe and ran his personal best time,” the Highland coach continued. “I was proud of the way he competed today and how he put it all out there in his last high school race. Luke (Baxter) showed up sick and ran his personal best in an unreal 1,600-meter race that had some of the fastest times we have seen this year.”

Highland will send Adams, Good, Williams and both Adelaide, and Luke Baxter, to the state meet next Friday and Saturday at James Madison University in Harrisonburg.

“Overall, I’m ecstatic with the results of today’s meet,” Jackson said. “We are getting to a place where we feel we can compete in any event we are in and that makes me proud as a coach.”
