HARRISONBURG — Highland High School was well represented at the VHSL Class 1 Track and Field State Championships Saturday at Sentara Park on the campus of James Madison University.
The boys’ relay team of seniors Eli Moore and John Wagner, along with juniors Patton Hull and Elijah Good, competed in two events.
In the 4×100, the Rams posted a personal best time of 47.30 seconds to finish sixth in their heat and 21st overall, and in the 4×400, the foursome placed 12th out of 18 teams with another PR, 3:46.80.
In the girls’ competition, junior Colleen Adams competed in the high jump but did not place. It was the first time advancing to the state meet for Adams, who holds the Rams’ school record in the high jump at four feet, six inches.
“We had a great finish to the season,” said Highland coach Colby Jackson. “All of our athletes put immense work into their preparation for the state finals and it showed.
“Colleen was prepared and ready for the high jump and, even in the rain, she almost cleared her PR and would be school record 4-8, missing by a hair on her final jump,” he added. “We had our best times of the season for both relays and we fought as hard as I have seen the 4×400 team fight in a grueling race to place 12th. While we did not medal, the effort displayed was an exciting end to this track season and I’m proud of every kid who competed on the big stage.”
