MONTEREY — Heavy rain and storms early this week wreaked havoc on spring sports.
In fact, it has canceled the remainder of the Pioneer District’s baseball regular season.
Highland High School athletic director Mike Warf confirmed Wednesday morning that the remaining baseball games on the schedule have been canceled and the seeding for next week’s district tournament have been set.
The Rams will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will have a bye to the semifinals, and have clinched the program’s second Class 1, Region C berth in the last 25 years.
First-round games on Monday will send No. 6 Craig County (0-8 Pioneer, 0-13 overall) to No. 3 Bath County (4-4, 5-9) and No. 5 Parry McCluer (3-6, 4-12) to No. 4 Eastern Montgomery (4-4, 10-4-1).
Monday’s winners will not only advance to Tuesday’s semifinals but also earn Region C tournament berths.
The Bath County/Craig County winner will face No. 2 Highland (6-3, 9-5) in one semi, with the East Mont/Parry McCluer survivor taking on No. 1 Narrows (8-0, 13- 2) in the other.
A Ram win on Tuesday would give the team a regional quarterfinal home game on Wednesday, May 28.
The Pioneer tournament championship and consolation games will be played next Thursday.
The Pioneer District track meet scheduled for Wednesday was postponed until today and could be canceled altogether, said Warf. A decision was set to be made on the meet later Wednesday afternoon.
In girls’ tennis, Parry McCluer and Narrows will face off Monday in a playoff for the regular season championship at Glenvar. The loser will host Bath County in a tournament semifinal on Tuesday, with the championship match scheduled for Wednesday.
The individual singles and doubles tournaments will be held next Thursday at Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista.
