ELLISTON — John Wagner had four hits and pitched the complete-game victory here last Tuesday, leading Highland to an 8-1 Pioneer District baseball win over Eastern Montgomery.
The victory was the third straight for the Rams, who moved to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the Pioneer District.
Wagner, a senior, needed just 76 pitches to take care of the Mustangs, scattering five hits and one unearned run, while striking out three and walking one.
“John was great on the mound and at the plate,” said HHS coach Cole Armstrong. “He’s having a great year.”
The Rams’ defense made just a single error behind Wagner.
Highland’s offense scored three in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth and two in the seventh.
Zach Armstrong’s double scored Patton Hull, who had reached on an error, in the top of the first, Wagner followed with an RBI single and Elijah Good drove home Wagner with a ground out.
Wagner and Evan Kimble both had RBI hits in the second, Wagner drove home another in the fourth and two East Mont errors and doubles from Wagner and Eli Moore added up to two insurance runs in the seventh.
Wagner scored three runs and drove in two in his 4-for-4 day, while Hull, Armstrong, Kimble, Moore, Tristan Carpenter and Good all had one hit each.
Austin Tate had a hit and scored a run for the Mustangs, who are 2-2 in the Pioneer and 8-2-1 overall.
Highland played at Parry McCluer on Tuesday and is at home today against Craig County. The Rams host Bath County in an area matchup on Monday in Monterey.
