MONTEREY — The Highland cross country team is small in numbers this fall.

In fact, sophomore Cash Chambers is the lone varsity runner.

But Ram coach Mike Warf is hoping a seven-member middle school squad bodes well for the future of the sport at the school.

“They are all good kids and each has their own reasons for running cross country,” said Warf, who is also the school’s athletic director. “I’m looking forward to getting in a few meets and seeing how we can improve as the season progresses.”

Chambers is a first-year runner.

“He has a great attitude and work ethic,” said Warf. “He is making progress and has impressed me so far.”

The girls’ middle school roster includes eighth-grader Adelaide Baxter and seventh- grader Juliet Scott, while the boys’ team is made up of seventh-grader Oliver Summers and eighth-graders Owen Honaker, Preston Jaccard, Steven Rogers and Levi Warner.

“The middle school team is coming along,” said Warf. “New runners for the middle school are Adelaide and Preston.”

Highland opened the season on Wednes- day, hosting a Pioneer District meet at the Karl Mey Cross Country Course in Monterey.

The Rams run at Parry McCluer next Wednesday.
