MONTEREY — The Highland cross country team is small in numbers this fall.

In fact, sophomore Cash Chambers is the lone varsity runner.

But Ram coach Mike Warf is hoping a seven-member middle school squad bodes well for the future of the sport at the school.

β€œThey are all good kids and each has their own reasons for running cross country,” said Warf, who is also the school’s athletic director. β€œI’m looking forward to getting in a few meets and seeing how we can improve as the season progresses.”

Chambers is a first-year runner.

β€œHe has a great attitude and work ethic,” said Warf. β€œHe is making progress and has impressed me so far.”

The girls’ middle school roster includes eighth-grader Adelaide Baxter and seventh- grader Juliet Scott, while the boys’ team is made up of seventh-grader Oliver Summers and eighth-graders Owen Honaker, Preston Jaccard, Steven Rogers and Levi Warner.

β€œThe middle school team is coming along,” said Warf. β€œNew runners for the middle school are Adelaide and Preston.”

Highland opened the season on Wednes- day, hosting a Pioneer District meet at the Karl Mey Cross Country Course in Monterey.

The Rams run at Parry McCluer next Wednesday.
