MONTEREY — The Highland cross country team is small in numbers this fall.
In fact, sophomore Cash Chambers is the lone varsity runner.
But Ram coach Mike Warf is hoping a seven-member middle school squad bodes well for the future of the sport at the school.
βThey are all good kids and each has their own reasons for running cross country,β said Warf, who is also the schoolβs athletic director. βIβm looking forward to getting in a few meets and seeing how we can improve as the season progresses.β
Chambers is a first-year runner.
βHe has a great attitude and work ethic,β said Warf. βHe is making progress and has impressed me so far.β
The girlsβ middle school roster includes eighth-grader Adelaide Baxter and seventh- grader Juliet Scott, while the boysβ team is made up of seventh-grader Oliver Summers and eighth-graders Owen Honaker, Preston Jaccard, Steven Rogers and Levi Warner.
βThe middle school team is coming along,β said Warf. βNew runners for the middle school are Adelaide and Preston.β
Highland opened the season on Wednes- day, hosting a Pioneer District meet at the Karl Mey Cross Country Course in Monterey.
The Rams run at Parry McCluer next Wednesday.
