PEARISBURG — Highland’s Jazmine Douglas swept the girls’ sprint races and Covington’s Desmond Jordan and Purcel Turner posted wins at Giles High School Wednesday in the Pioneer District track championships.

Douglas scored 26 points and helped the Ram girls to a fourth-place finish, while Colton Williams placed in five different events on his way to 17 points, leading the Highland boys to fifth place.
Turner had 18 points and Jordan added 14 and the Cougar boys tied Parry McCluer for third.
Douglas won both the 100-meters (13.85) and 200-meters (29.09) for the Rams; Colleen Adams placed in three events, including a second in the high jump, and scored 13 points, and Zalea Good added four points.
“Jazmine walks away as a two-time district champion as a sophomore after battling back through being sick all week,” said HHS coach Colby Jackson. “Colleen and Zalea advanced in the 100-meter as well. Both were first-year competitors in the race. Colleen won a second-place finish in high jump in only her third attempt at the event. Zalea made it in the long jump, 100-meter and 400-meter.”
Williams was second in the shot put and also advances to the regionals in the 100, 200, long jump and 4x100-meter relay — with Zach Armstrong, Elijah Good and Eli Moore — for the Highland boys.
“Colton advances in five events; John Wagner advanced in the discus with a fourth-place finish and has improved with very little practice time due to a grueling baseball schedule and pitching,” Jackson said. “Our 4x100 team performed well with two new members. Freshman Cash Chambers advanced in the shot put after adding 10 feet from the beginning of the season.
“I thought we performed well,” added the coach. “Everyone has the opportunity to compete again next week. We had an unfortunate miscommunication in the 4x800 that cost us a chance to compete, but overall I was very happy with the kids’ effort.”
Jordan, a Cougar freshman, won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.97, while Turner’s winning high jump was 5 feet, 9 inches.
“I was very proud of how everyone competed and represented Covington High School today, especially considering the weather conditions,” said CHS coach Ly’chelle Hall. “I’m looking forward to regionals with my three guys next week.”
Bath County’s Natalie White and Aiden Sensabaugh ran in the 1,600-meter races and both placed fourth and will advance to regional competition.
“They both are looking forward to regionals as it’s one more chance to qualify for states,” said BCHS coach Jeremy White.
Narrows won both the boys’ and girls’ team championships.
Covington ran in the Christiansburg Invitational on Saturday. Turner placed third in the high jump and fifth in the triple jump, while Jordan was eighth in the high hurdles.
The Class 1, Region C championships are set for Wednesday, back at Giles. Field events start at 3 p.m., with running events starting at approximately 4:30 p.m.
