HCPS Supt. Welcome

Highland County

Dear Families, Friends, and Students:

During the 2024-2025 school year, Highland County Public Schools has learned a lesson from Stephen R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and will be focused on keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing. For us, the Main Thing is teaching the Virginia Standards of Learning, maintaining a safe learning environment, and preparing our students for future learning, successful careers, and engaged citizenship.

As we welcome our new and returning students, families, and staff members, we are excited to be implementing our new literacy plan, adopting a new elementary school reading curriculum, partnering with Valley Career and Technical Center in Fishersville, and providing new learning opportunities for our high school students. In support of the Main Thing, we will strive to know our students as individual learners and work to differentiate instruction to meet each student's academic, vocational, social, and emotional needs.

While we prepare to keep the Main Thing the Main Thing, I would like to thank our School Board and the Highland County Supervisors for their continued support of our educational program. Both boards play a critical role in the success of our school division and students.

In addition, please know that our administrators, teachers, and staff members strive to help all students in their development as individuals. Together, we look forward to working with our students, families, and community to keep the Main Thing the Main Thing.

Sincerely,

Drew R. Maerz, Superintendent
